Unauthorized immigrants and driver’s licenses

A study of the short-term traffic safety effects of California’s Assembly Bill 60 (AB60), which extended driving privileges to unauthorized immigrants in 2015, reports that accidents per capita and the share of fatal accidents did not change as more AB60 licenses were issued in a county, but the rate of hit-and-run accidents declined with an increasing share of licenses issued under AB60, suggesting that providing unauthorized immigrants with access to driver’s licenses can have positive effects on local communities. - Read at PNAS
