Manufactured capital and resource use

Based on global natural resources data, researchers find that approximately half of all extracted raw materials are used for the construction, maintenance, and operation of buildings, infrastructure, equipment, and machinery, and that the amount of materials accumulated in manufactured capital increased 23-fold from 1900 to 2010 globally; the authors estimate that rising demands for manufactured capital by emerging economies could cause associated carbon dioxide emissions to exceed climate change mitigation goals outlined at the Paris 2015 Climate Conference. - Read at PNAS.org
