Communicating with light

Researchers report that an artificial neural network was able to distinguish among different patterns of light beams, or mode superpositions, with more than 80% accuracy after the lights have been twisted and sent over 143 kilometers, 50 times farther than previous studies; the authors also encoded, transmitted, and recovered a message with light modes, illustrating the potential uses of light modes in communication technologies.
